Here is a link to some more unrequired reading, The Problem with Music by musician and producer Steve Albini. Written in the early 1990s and first published in the punk
music zine fanzine Maximum Rock n Roll, it is deeply critical of the business model of major record labels. In the nearly 20 years since it was written, musicians have been freed by alternatives to recording with a major label; both recording and distribution have become accessible to anyone who can download music production software and upload music files.
Anyone considering a career in the music industry should certainly read it (Entertainment Tech majors?), if just to learn how business was done in the recent past, and also to hear a very different opinion than the one expressed by Elton in her essay about the value of record labels. ~Prof. L.
